"The Food I Love"

The 26 of June, from 7.30PM to 10PM. Cristina Alvarez Magliano will host visual artists and musician in "The Food I Love", a multidisciplinary approach to an emblematic subject of modern society.

It is a recognizable fact that food in itself has become a very tough matter concerning both extremes of a long line: the lack of it, in one side, and the excess in the other. To recognize the political, social and economical problems derived from the first point, one doesn't need more than watch/read/notice the concerns expressed in global conferences, specially those relatives to high prices of food that poor countries cannot afford. On the other hand, more prosperous societies face the other big, modern problem derived from the easy access to the industrialized sources of nourishment. In short: hunger and obesity seem to be the extremes in constant tension en modern societies.

The visual artists Alvarez, Braham, Cook, Corraini, Jessen, Smart and Stead present an individual point of view in images.

Cris Alvarez dedicated "Stardust and chocolate" -marquetry on board- to show how difficult would be to say 'NO' to a big piece of cake.

Chelsey Braham

Nana Cook dedicated her piece to remark the necessary connection between food and nature, specially in the abundance of BC rain forest, in a colorful acrylic on canvas.

Rod Corraini dedicated two pieces absolutely opposed in their meaning: on one hand, Rod painted the action of eating real italian pasta in "Gnocchi"- a bright, colorful oil on canvas- ; on the other hand he painted "Poverty" depicting an empty and closed glass jar of nothing -a white and gray oil on canvas.

Mary Jane Jessen chose two of her favourite themes: the influence of the global warming on fish life and, obviously, the link with food, painting in acrylic and oils with the addition of collage elements.

Jan Smart dedicated one of her paintings from the series "Abundance" (composed mainly of appealing fruits and crustaceous) a very red, bright, menacing lobster that she titled "Gazing Left".

Lee Stead showed her connection with nature and food on a more country/soil rich/tender style: she rather takes green onions and asparagus as her favorite meal for a wonderful pair of trays in bright ceramic.
